It’s pretty safe to say that Jane Birkin’s
most famous plus-one was French singer Serge
Gainsbourg — with a penchant for risqué lyrics
and generally scandalising antics, he’s pretty hard
to ignore.
But there’s another — more low-key, but no-less-
constant — protagonist, who we think deserves to
get some airtime: Birkin’s beloved A-line mini
dress. With its relaxed fit, cap sleeves and thigh-
skimming hemline, it’s a style Birkin would have on
high-rotation, in any number of guises, all summer
long.
This look is so classically chic, there’s practically
no risk of it looking costumey— in fact, we think
it’s a failsafe way to replicate the Birkin ‘woke up
like this’ take on glamour (and we mean that
literally: to quote Birkin, ‘I buy things often, but I
sleep in them for two weeks, and then they really
look quite rough.’) So this summer, throw on our
Embroidered Mini Dress, grab your favourite
wicker tote, ruffle up those beachy waves and
head for the marina (pop star optional).
